Lakeland Medical Center Pavilion

St. Joseph, Michigan

Through a thoughtfully integrated donor recognition and storytelling program, Altitude Design Office transforms moments of gratitude into a meaningful, place-based experience for patients, families, and caregivers.

A renovation and expansion of the Lakeland Medical Center created an opportunity to reimagine the hospital’s patient and family experience while honoring the community whose generosity made the $160 million project possible. The hospital sought a donor recognition program that would celebrate contributors to its capital campaign, acknowledge caregivers, and reflect a deep sense of place rooted in West Michigan’s natural beauty.

Altitude approached the work as both storytelling and environment-making, drawing inspiration from the nearby shores of Lake Michigan and the region’s dune landscapes. Within a three-story atrium anchored by an interior healing garden, the donor installation uses layered wood, translucent art-glass elements, and a palette of cool greens and blues to evoke dappled light and the quiet shimmer of water. A quilt-like composition—expressed through varied shapes and tones—symbolizes the strength and interconnectedness of the community, while accommodating a clear hierarchy of giving.

Complementary branded installations including lobby graphics and a history display extend this narrative throughout the hospital’s public spaces, celebrating Lakeland’s century-long legacy of care and integrating with local artist contributions.

The result is a cohesive, human-centered experience that honors generosity with warmth and clarity, creating moments of reflection, recognition, and connection for patients, families, staff, and the broader community. And while the medical center’s name has changed over the years from Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph to Spectrum Health Lakeland to its current Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital moniker, this connection—and the hospital’s visible gratitude for it—remains constant.
