MLK Community Healthcare

Los Angeles, California

A unified system of visual cues across MLK Community Healthcare locations brings clarity to complex environments, supporting equitable access to critical health services.

Altitude Design Office partnered with MLK Community Healthcare to extend its brand identity into the built environment—creating a unified system of signage, wayfinding, murals, and environmental graphics across numerous locations including MLK Community Hospital, the onsite medical office building, and the offsite network of community clinics.

As a vital healthcare provider serving South Los Angeles, MLK challenged our team to help bring clarity and calm to moments of urgency, while ensuring that every point of care felt familiar, welcoming, and easy to navigate, regardless of location.

Building on MLK’s established brand palette, Altitude developed a system-wide approach that translated color, typography, and visual language into a cohesive and informative spatial experience.

Working closely with the client’s marketing team, Altitude focused the design to emphasize warmth, optimism, and accessibility through bold yet approachable visual cues. Bilingual English and Spanish signage supports clear communication, while photography of staff and patients reflects the diversity of the community and reinforces a sense of recognition and belonging.

Across each site, signage and environmental graphics are designed as intuitive breadcrumbs, guiding visitors through corridors with repeated color, layered cues, and moments of reassurance along the journey.

Floor and zone color-coding helps organize complex programs, while murals, quotes, and community imagery introduce a human presence that softens circulation spaces and reinforces place.

The result is a clear, consistent, and human-centered system that helps people navigate care with confidence—transforming what can be a stressful experience into one that feels grounded, legible, and supported, while strengthening trust in preventive and community-based care over time.
