The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center

A new home for the La Jolla Music Society, built from the gifts of many supporters, becomes a cultural jewel for the greater San Diego community.

Located in the heart of the Village of La Jolla, The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center provides a new home not only for the La Jolla Music Society, but for the arts and culture community of San Diego at large. The Conrad was funded almost entirely by private donors, and without any public funding – a feat for any nonprofit arts organization. These generous gifts that made the project possible, therefore, become a centerpiece of the interior and exterior design strategy.

We built The Conrad on a hope and a dream. We can extend our legacy of ‘bringing the world to San Diego’ and of maintaining our status as a world-class organization, with our new world-class venue.”

Katherine Chapin, LJMS board chair, from La Jolla Light

The facility boasts a 500-seat state-of-the-art concert hall, as well as a 150-seat flexible use performance, education and/or social space. The outdoor garden plaza, protected from the street by a terra cotta veil, not only serves both as a mixing lobby, but also offers a lively social/performance space all its own. The signage within each of these spaces exudes a simple and quiet elegance, giving each donor their deserved recognition, while becoming an appropriate backdrop to the performances that make The Conrad a world-class destination.
